Program Assistant Development Workshop

CE Hours 7

About this live event

IFS Trainings use a combination of teaching pieces and experiential exercises to bring the model to participants and provide them with a "felt" experience connecting with parts and Self. Through the nature of the training format, much of the skill development happens in practice and home groups run by Program Assistants (PAs), who receive guidance and support from the Trainers in staff meetings. This workshop is designed for mental health professionals and others in allied fields, interested in being a Program Assistant in an IFS Training. This workshop's focus will be to increase participants awareness, offer skill building and structure to become effective Program Assistants and to facilitate better IFS oriented interventions in clinical practice. This training will be led by Program Assistant staff and IFS Lead Trainers. Learning the IFS model requires both cognitive understanding and access to our internal systems. Activations occur for all participants during training, and staff provide skillful guidance by naming their own processes as well as modeling unblending, speaking for parts and other skills. Developing skill as a Program Assistant and IFS oriented clinician requires handling challenges and opportunities that occur during trainings. It involves working with our own parts, and modeling Self-led feedback. In this workshop, we will explore how our parts react and respond to conflict, and how our patterns and assumptions might be limiting our engagement. This workshop also covers continued learning and skill development around how our identities are impacted by external systems, which is increasingly important for creating a more inclusive and supportive training environment and therapeutic setting. This includes naming our identities in staff introductions, exploring how external systems impact our safety and protection needs, and learning to address micro-aggressions and ruptures as they arise. During the workshop participants will: • Expand their skills for increasing inclusion and embracing “both/and” perspectives. • Strengthen their abilities to handle conflict. • Explore the value of repair. • Build practice around typical experiences within the group/training setting. The workshop will provide mentoring from Program Assistants and give participants the support and guidance they need to develop greater skill, confidence, and Self energy as effective Program Assistants. Many of these skills can be applied in clinical settings outside of an IFS Training and enhance therapeutic relationships.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the role and responsibilities of a Program Assistant, including the ability to handle challenges and opportunities that arise during sessions, work with their own parts, and model Self-led feedback.
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of speaking for parts and the ability to identify when it is appropriate to do so in order to help others identify and connect with their own parts.
  • Identify and assess power differentials within a group/training setting and understand how these can impact the therapeutic relationship.
  • Identify how cultural and legacy burdens inform our navigation in life, and how these may influence others' experiences and perspectives within the therapeutic setting.
  • Apply skills with greater confidence when teaching and holding space for participants, including the ability to facilitate group exercises and provide feedback to participants.
  • Demonstrate the ability to bring more Self-energy into a group setting, including the ability to step in, interrupt, and slow down when necessary to create a safe and supportive therapeutic environment.
  • Demonstrate greater skill and understanding of the IFS model and the ability to teach it to others, including the ability to integrate the model in a group setting.

Different states, provinces, and other governmental jurisdictions may have different policies regarding dual/multiple relationships for counselors, therapists, and other professionals for whom dual/multiple relationships may exist.

Therefore, workshop participants are expected to take responsibility for checking with their particular and applicable governing policies, and for adhering to the professional standards for dual/multiple relationships outlined therein. Participants in IFS Institute programs are also expected to adhere to the governing policies of their professional disciplines regarding dual/multiple relationships. Participants take full responsibility for any issues that may arise in regard to dual/multiple relationships, and any dual/multiple relationship issue does not exempt you from fulfilling your payment to attend the workshop.
