Introduction to IFS for Therapists Serving Veterans & Military Clients
This experiential, introductory workshop offers mental health professionals an opportunity to explore the foundations of the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model and its application with military personnel, veterans, and their families. Amy Marcotte, IFS Lead Trainer and U.S. Veteran, will explore how IFS's non-pathologizing approach, grounded in the belief that there are no bad parts, can help clients heal trauma, resolve inner conflict, and improve the quality of their relationships. • Strategies for resolving inner conflicts that stem from attachment wounds and traumatic experiences
• Practical skills for identifying and differentiating clients’ internal parts
• Ways to help clients cultivate Self-leadership so they can respond with greater clarity, compassion, confidence, creativity, courage, and connection

Learning Objectives
- Describe the history and basic assumptions of the Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy model, including its non-pathological view of the mind’s multiplicity and the concept of Self.
- Differentiate between parts and Self and explain how changes in the internal system influence external relationships and systems.
- Utilize techniques such as guided meditation, journaling or drawing to externalize the relational dynamics of the internal system.
- Describe how the IFS model supports trauma healing through the release of burdens parts carry and restore internal harmony/balance.
- Identify differences in the role of the therapist in the IFS model compared to other therapeutic models and apply these differences when analyzing the client’s internal system and its role(s) in mental health.
- List two key therapeutic goals of IFS therapy, including strengthening Self-leadership and supporting greater harmony within the internal system, and explain how these goals apply to clients presenting with mental health concerns.
Target Audience
Designed as an introduction to the IFS model, the program is appropriate for both beginners and those with prior experience with IFS. A foundational understanding of psychotherapy practice is recommended. This workshop serves as an introduction to the IFS model and does not qualify for IFS credits.
